Creating a dining room that promotes the joy of eating

The dining environment is as important as the food that is served there; the décor, the room size, the furniture, lighting, music and even the condiments bring it to life, says Sophie Murray, head of nutrition and hydration for Sunrise Senior Living and Gracewell Healthcare

A cognitive impairment, such as dementia, creates the need for an even more comforting but directed dining environment. The dining room may be used up to three times each day, so it is easy to appreciate that the right setting, which incorporates simplicity and memory aids, can be very helpful to those with more complex needs.

For someone with dementia, dining may not be an easy or pleasurable experience unless changes are made that support the memory and encourage dignity. In simple terms, by stimulating all the senses and ensuring residents understand what is available, we can help to maximise their abilities and skills so that they can partake in the dining experience with dignity and purpose.

First impressions are quickly formed. Therefore the dining room needs to be a visual delight. Does it entice people in with a wow factor? Does it appear intimidating? People with dementia have described how the use of bolder colours can help define a dining room; for example, tablecloths can provide contrast and show that a level of care  has been taken, as long as they are made of  good quality fabric and are in good condition.
