Key design elements in the care homes of the future

Avnish Goyal, chair of Hallmark Care Homes and chair of Care England, discusses some of the key design elements that help to ensure care homes provide the best possible living environment for residents and stand the test of time

Hallmark Care Homes has been building care homes since 1999. The company’s vision has always been to build the care homes of the future to stand the test of time and provide an outstanding environment for residents to enjoy for many years to come.

Arlington Manor in Cambridge and Chamberlain Court in Kent are the latest Hallmark homes to have been completed. In 2018, Chamberlain Court won two national design awards including an award from Knight Frank in the ‘Luxury Care Home’ category and a Pinders Healthcare Design award. It was the sixth time Hallmark has won a Pinders award for the design of a new build in the past seven years

Always create amenities that improve resident comfort, wellbeing and choice and consider internal decoration, signage and navigational aids from the design stage. Finally, request feedback from residents, relatives and the staff team and be prepared to adapt the design accordingly. Consultation with others and continued evolvement is the key to building care homes that stand the test of time and enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives.
