Solutions to help maintain dignity and independence

The lack of an effective toileting routine has knock on consequences that have an impact on the health and wellbeing of residents and members of staff as well as on laundry bills and other running costs, says Robin Tuffley, marketing manager, Closomat

Helping residents to use the toilet can be more of an issue than some care home operators realise. For example, it takes up a vast amount of staff time. Plus, a survey by Unison found that more than onequarter of care workers said they were too busy to take residents to the toilet.1

Consider how much time it actually takes. On average, an individual goes to the toilet eight times per day. Accompanying a resident to the toilet might take about 15 minutes, which could equate to two hours per resident every day. If two members of staff are needed, that makes up to four hours per day for each resident.

Then, there are the cost implications. Obviously staff wages vary, but at £7.81 per hour, toilet duties could be costing care home operators more than £30 per day per resident.
